Leviticus 23:4 & 34 âThese are the appointed times of the Lord, holy convocations which you shall proclaim at the times appointed for them. â Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, âOn the fifteenth of this seventh month is the Feast of Booths for seven days to the Lord. On the first day is a holy convocation; you shall do no laborious work of any kind. v.39 â On exactly the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when you have gathered in the crops of the land, you shall celebrate the feast of the Lord for seven days, with a rest on the first day and a rest on the eighth day. Now on the first day you shall take for yourselves the foliage of beautiful trees, palm branches and boughs of leafy trees and willows of the brook, and you shall rejoice before the Lord your God for seven days. You shall thus celebrate it as a feast to the Lord for seven days in the year. It shall be a perpetual statute throughout your generations, you shall celebrate it in the seventh month. You shall live in booths for seven days, all the native-born in Israel shall live in booths so that your generations may know that I had the sons of Israel live in booths when I brought them out from the land of Egypt. I am the Lord your God.â

This feast is called âSukkotâ, (the Feast of Tabernacles or the Feast of Booths) â A time when the whole community of believers moves into temporary shelters âboothsâ and âlives with the Lord for seven daysâ. It is a time when a person displays all the bounty they can and the feeling is that there is no âwantâ or deprivation.

This is probably the feast that most resembles a âPartyâ. Everywhere you go in Israel during this feast, you will find the sukkah. In back yards, on roof tops, on the grounds of every hotel and kibbutz, you find these little temporary shelters. They range from very tiny, humble and shabby to very beautiful, ornate and large. When we were there, you would even see them on apartment balconies no wider than three feet.

Some years ago, I was privileged to visit Israel. On the last night of Sukkot, my roommate and I were in Tiberias located on the Sea of Galilee. Because our internal clocks were confused, we found ourselves standing on the balcony of our hotel observing a rollicking, on-going party at four in the morning (Israel time). In a plaza a few hundred feet from the hotel, there was a band with a singer (singing â loudly) with plenty of room for many dancers who were dancing vigorously. We later found out that this was a festival called âSimhat Torahâ meaning Rejoicing of the Torah. It is not mentioned in scripture and is not actually a part of the Sukkot celebration, but has been celebrated for so long the day following Sukkot, that it just all runs together.

I also noticed a square blue tarp-covered structure on the grounds of this beautiful hotel I was staying in, and that there were men sleeping in it ( I could just see feet protruding from the doorway). When I asked what this structure was, I was told that it was a sukka, erected for the Feast of Sukkot. Somehow, I donât think it was what I expected.
